Government Net Zero Transport Plan released
The critical role of R&D in helping the Freight sector decarbonise cannot be ignored. Transport, including Freight, is a key part of achieving the Australian Government’s recently announced emissions reductions target of 62–70% below 2005 levels on the pathway to net zero by 2050.
Freight remains an ongoing challenge. Heavy vehicles, vast distances, aging infrastructure, and climate extremes make decarbonising freight complex and urgent.
Solving issues and achieving the targets is not just about funding. Many low-emission technologies are still emerging and are not yet suited to Australia’s unique conditions.
The real opportunity lies in collaboration, harmonisation and in building the knowledge and innovation needed to identify, test and scale new technologies and processes that move goods in more clean and efficient ways.
In short, there is a critical need for research, innovation, and evidence-based solutions that will speed up and de-risk new approaches.
To address this, we are working with a range of partners to establish the Future Freight Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) as Australia’s first dedicated freight R&D centre. We will join industry, government, and research partners to deliver high-impact projects to benefit our businesses, communities and the nation as a whole.
The Centre will generate evidence-based knowledge and innovative solutions to support Australia’s independence in goods distribution, accelerate decarbonisation and improve the efficiency of multimodal freight movement.
This is our chance to bring together all those with a genuine interest in decarbonising freight to co-design solutions, share knowledge, and develop the skills needed for a low-carbon, efficient, and resilient freight sector.
We are onboarding partners now, so get in touch if this resonates with you.
